Are keratin treatments safe, and do they contain formaldehyde?
Some keratin products contain or release formaldehyde, so it's worth asking what's in the one being used. SafeWork NSW warns that formaldehyde, which the World Health Organization classes as a cancer-causing substance, can be released during keratin straightening, especially when heat is applied. Australia's Poisons Standard counts methylene glycol and formaldehyde released by other ingredients as free formaldehyde, and bans cosmetics with 0.05 per cent or more of it unless they contain no more than 0.2 per cent and are labelled 'Contains formaldehyde'. Can I have a keratin treatment while pregnant?
Check with your midwife or doctor before having a keratin treatment while pregnant. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby, the Australian Government's pregnancy health service, says some hair straightening treatments contain formaldehyde, and while there's no evidence it harms unborn babies, it's a known carcinogen and should be avoided.
